With good grades, extracurriculars and community services, on the surface Andrew seems like a good candidate for admission. The issue – Andrew already locked into his junior year curriculum has never taken an advance placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) course – the most difficult courses at his high school.
With admit rates of 15% & 22%, both UC-Berkeley and U. Notre Dame are highly selective schools. Without any obvious hooks (special talents), the reality is that Andrew cannot compete academically with other students who are applying to these schools.
