* Myth – it is difficult to get admitted to a “good” school.

To date no one has been able to define what “good” means. “Good” for one student may mean enrolling in a certificate program at technical or community college, “good” for another might mean enrolling at a school with an unusually friendly atmosphere, “good” may lead you to a college where a large majority of students participate in study abroad experiences, or “good” may mean you are attracted to schools with very rigorous academic standards.

* Reality – 80% of colleges accept the majority of those who apply.

True, some “brand name” colleges are hard to get into, but often a “good match” college is easy to get into and doesn’t need to come with a $60,000 price tag.

2) College is expensive enough, won’t hiring a college planner just add to my overall college costs?

  • Only 48.5% of students graduate from the first college they attend, if they persist to graduation at all.
  • Nationally 33% of students will transfer.
  • The average cost of tuition and fees for the 2015–2016 school year was $32,405 at private colleges, $9,410 for state residents at public colleges, and $23,893 for out-of-state residents attending public universities.
